What Makes a Diamond Sparkle? Everything You Need to Know

Daniel Grunberger · January 21, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Whether you’re a novice or an expert in gemology, people love knowing what makes a diamond sparkle—and determining whether or not that sparkle is real, or fake. Diamonds are the most sought after gem on earth, and nothing is quite as brilliant as their shine. However, achieving this brilliance is entirely dependent on the cut itself, and a gem that elegantly reflects light is a sure sign of expert craftsmanship. Still, with the amount of synthetic and faux diamonds floating around the market, which can often look the part as the real thing, it’s always the right move to take it a step further, and know the signs between a real diamond sparkle vs. a fake one.

Real Diamond Sparkle vs. Fake

To properly analyze the difference between a real diamond sparkle vs. a fake, let’s start with a little bit of science. What makes a diamond sparkle comes down to the cut, and the way a beam of light reflects off of a gem. When a beam of light hits a diamond, its speed slows down significantly more than in the air, and this difference of speed bends the light into various rainbows of color and streaks of brilliance. The sparkle you see when looking at a diamond is merely a reflection of this light, and those dark spots you see… well chances are that’s your own reflection blocking some of the light. So, how do we tell the difference?

Perhaps the easiest way to determine a real diamond sparkle vs. a fake is to have it surveyed by an expert, who should easily be able to tell the difference. However, many at-home diamond sparkle tests exist to help you determine the legitimacy of a gem without the need for professional help. These tests can be completed with minor inconvenience and at little cost, and most of the time are extremely accurate if performed correctly. Some of these tests include:

  • Diamond Sparkle Test – The way a stone reflects and refracts light is a good indication of its authenticity. Since this natural light refraction cannot be altered, you should look for shades of gray in your sparkle analysis. If your stone is reflecting an array of iridescent colors, it most likely is synthetic.
  • Sandpaper Test – For this test, simply rub the gritty side of a piece of sandpaper against the stone in question. Since diamonds are one of the world’s hardest materials, a real diamond will not be affected by this scratching. However, a fake diamond will show signs of wear.
  • Read-through Test – This is a simple test that only calls for a piece of paper with readable black text. To perform, turn your stone upside down, and look through the upturned diamond to attempt to read the words. If the diamond is real, it will be impossible to see or read any of the text. If it’s fake, you will be able to make out the words to some extent, or read it completely.
  • Water Test – All you need to do is here is place your diamond in a cup of water. If it sinks, it’s real, as diamonds have an incredibly high density. If it floats either at the top or somewhere in the middle, it very likely is fake.

What Diamond Cut Sparkles the Most?

The various types of diamond cuts have a large role to play in how well a diamond sparkles, and even the slightest difference in cut can bring massive changes to the shine and elegance. Two of the main cut styles that produce this sparkle include brilliant cut and step cut. A brilliant cut is where angular facets radiate out from a center point, and will most of the time be more sparkly than their counterpart. Step cuts, which have long, rectangular facets arranged in a square or rectangular fashion, have a more subtle, sophisticated flash.

Hearts and Arrows diamonds also have a particularly brilliant shine. For this diamond cut, it has a particular cut pattern of faceting that you can see reflected in a diamond’s light return with a special scope, appearing in the shapes of hearts and arrows. These are among the most difficult cuts to achieve, and truly create a brilliant sparkle often unmatched with others.

Despite the countless challenges of 2020, jewelry sales in the United States have picked up substantially. In fact, all 50 states saw an increase in consumer spending this past month, as did nearly all retail sectors, according to data released by Mastercard last week.

The Resilience of Diamonds

Daniel Grunberger · August 26, 2020 · Leave a Comment

At first it seemed unlikely the industry would fully return. Trade shows in Hong Kong, Basel, and Las Vegas were cancelled, other events moved online, or postponed indefinitely. The vast majority of stores and retailers were shuttered by April. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic put the industry on hold. While many may question the resilience of the jewelry industry through this pandemic, recent growth in consumer spending on luxury goods, such as diamonds, has demonstrated that jewelry’s timeless nature has continued to appeal to consumers even in such uncertain times.

De Beers recently released a report following a survey that 60% of men intend to purchase diamond jewelry for a loved one this holiday season. According to the Boston Consulting Group, high-end travel is predicted to drop significantly this year. While the travel industry has suffered, people are electing to forego previously planned trips or opt for “stay-cations,” instead many are now interested in purchasing fine jewelry to supplement lost travel. Diamonds remain popular around the globe despite these slowdowns witnessed in other retail sectors because of their enduring value and timelessness.

The key benefits of acquiring diamond jewelry during times of economic uncertainty, like we are facing now, are that diamonds are a lifelong treasure, provide a meaningful way to express devotion, and are a solid investment. Like gold, natural diamonds are a stable and useful long-term possession that has helped shield against instability across decades. Common with other physical commodities, diamonds are virtually inflation proof and unlike gold take up a small physical space for what they can be worth.

The pandemic has not ended, but slowly we are observing upward trends in diamond purchasing. Natural diamonds, unlike lab grown diamonds — which retain little to no value, remain an important asset of diversification and beauty. Grunberger Diamonds continues to provide stones that are ethically sourced, all natural, and retain exceptional value with an incredible cut.

The Value of Precision

Daniel Grunberger · July 28, 2020 ·

At Grunberger Diamonds, we guarantee an unmatched level of precision. All of our stones meet stringent sourcing, cutting, and sorting criteria. Members of the Responsible Jewellery Council are frequently audited to ensure compliance with ethical standards, transparency and traceability. Grunberger Diamonds has consistently and successfully proven that our supply chain remains committed to open manufacturing standards.

Here’s an overview of what you can expect from us:

Sourcing

We purchase very specific types of rough from a select group of suppliers we’ve had a relationship with for decades. This helps us know exactly what we are buying, virtually eliminating any chance that foreign or unnatural products enter our system. All of our rough come from guaranteed conflict-free sources that are in full compliance with the Kimberley Process.

Cutting

Our company is vertically integrated, meaning we do not rely on outside sources or companies through production. Unlike many other melee diamond manufacturers, we inspect, cut, and polish each stone with the same precision, all under one roof.

As one of the first manufacturers of Ideal Cut melee with Hearts and Arrows, the Grunberger Precision Cut ® was created with the desire to bring out the best in what a diamond has to offer. The perfect homogeneity and reliability of our cut maximizes the brilliance within all jewelry pieces.

Sourcing

Once out of production, an inspection team sorts our stones into more than 40 qualities. They are then shipped to our headquarters in Antwerp Belgium, where they undergo another rigorous quality control process.  Sorting teams working at our sales offices in the U.S. and Japan reinspect every single stone before we finally send them out to our clients worldwide.

Precision and consistency remain the core values encompassing Grunberger Diamonds. Over 75 years, we have grown from a small outlet in Antwerp to a global firm maintaining the highest quality in sourcing, cutting, and sales of our products. We pride ourselves on being a company that operates at the highest ethical levels in the industry and standing at the forefront of providing top quality products and service to our clients.

The Value of Authenticity

Daniel Grunberger · June 29, 2020 · Leave a Comment

Hi there,

As a fourth generation partner at Grunberger Diamonds, I want to share my thoughts on where I see our industry shifting to meet the demands of today’s luxury consumers.

The June issue of Rapaport Magazine, “Spotlight on Gen Z,” did a great job highlighting changes the diamond industry must make to compete with other luxury sellers. A key takeaway from the issue: authenticity, transparency, and integrity are major factors in the buying compass among young people. For Gen Z-ers, 66% root their buying decisions in the quality of the brand along with 85% weighing heavily the authenticity. Ultimately , when it comes to diamond jewelry, the product, brand, and team all must authentic.

From our humble beginnings in Antwerp, Belgium, we’ve always stayed true to our roots. Our guarantee is authentic diamonds and through our vertical integration, our standards of quality, sourcing, and service have and will always remain at the highest level.

For John Sorich (@JohnnyOro), authenticity is at the heart of his stunning creations. We love the way he incorporates our Melee diamonds into his pieces:

We love seeing all the incredible products our diamonds become a part of — so don’t hesitate to tag us on Instagram or Facebook with your latest goods!

Sincerely,

Daniel Grunberger
