Beyond the 4Cs: Understanding the Protocols Behind Purchasing and Certifying Natural Diamonds

Daniel Grunberger · April 13, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Knowing that you are getting the real deal is very important when it comes to purchasing natural diamonds. With the popularity of lab-created diamonds that has occurred over the last few decades, they flood the diamond market, and their looks can be deceiving. On top of that, guaranteeing diamonds are ethically sourced and conflict-free is a big factor suppliers must consider.

This blog will delve deeper into the standard natural diamond protocol as followed by Grunberger Diamonds, along with some contextual information on natural diamonds, how they’re formed, and how they compare to synthetics.

What is a Natural Diamond?

Let’s first discuss what natural diamonds are, including how they are formed prior to being cut and polished for distribution. After many years, and miles below the Earth’s surface, at very high temperatures and high pressure, diamonds are formed. Making them into what we recognize, however, happens at a diamond supplier like Grunberger Diamonds. With tools to test each stone and skills to precisely cut them, suppliers provide the clarity and brilliance we expect once a diamond reaches a jeweler.

Synthetic Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds

Looking at a diamond, the first thing that comes to mind is its sparkle. But the look of a diamond is easily replicated. You would likely be unable to pick out synthetic diamonds vs. natural diamonds just by looks. In fact, lab-created diamonds have similar properties, but the one thing they are missing, the one thing you will always find in natural diamonds, is small amounts of nitrogen.

Advantages of Natural Diamonds

A top advantage of natural diamonds is their rarity. Since the process of forming takes time, the supply is more limited. Having a more limited supply leads to the next advantage, their value. A diamond’s value will only continue to go up as the supply stays down, following the basic laws of supply and demand. Lastly, the quality of diamonds beats out any lab-created diamond. At the end of the day, we can’t replicate it.

The Natural Diamond Protocol

Getting a quality diamond happens after the precious stones go through a protocol of testing to verify their authenticity. These tests are done by machines that sort out real vs. fake and help label those that make the cut as natural. From there, they can be identified by their 4cs and certified.

Every step in the process is in place to provide you with the highest quality diamond, as well as the transparency, traceability, and sustainability you expect when purchasing one. The protocol also provides industry-standard guidelines to protect buyers, allowing only trusted suppliers the opportunity to sell.

Benefits of the Natural Diamond Protocol

Having this diamond protocol in place benefits everyone involved. Moreover, ensuring that diamonds are ethically sourced and comply with rigorous standards helps improve transparency and trust. As an industry leader for melee diamonds, we pride ourselves on always being transparent. We provide consumers confidence in the conflict-free diamonds they receive, which helps to continuously promote a more sustainable and responsible diamond industry. Which then leads to better working conditions and fair labor practices.

Implementation of the Natural Diamond Protocol

You can be confident that any diamond from us meets the diamond protocol in place. The implementation and enforcement of it make suppliers go through various tests before they can label a diamond as natural.

At Grunberger Diamonds, we use state-of-the-art diamond testing equipment, such as our M+ Screen, which is used to test for lab-grown diamonds. By using short-wave UV light technology, the machine can detect chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) diamonds. From there, it will sort out brilliant diamonds and separate them from stones that may be synthetic. In addition to the M+ Screen, we utilize the GLS-3000, which employs ultraviolet irradiation to examine fluorescence and phosphorescence images of diamonds.

Along with required testing for the diamond protocol, industry organizations, and government bodies also play a crucial role. They focus on promoting the natural diamond trade by ensuring ethical sourcing and responsible business practices are conducted.

Is Diamond Fluorescence Good or Bad? What Is It and How Important Is This Quality?

Daniel Grunberger · November 4, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Diamond fluorescence – good or bad? This might be a question you’re asking yourself if you’re in the market to buy a piece of diamond jewelry. A diamond’s fluorescence can affect many important elements, including its price, market value, and appearance. It is almost certainly a quality that you’ll want to consider when buying a diamond. Understanding and knowing how a certain diamond’s fluorescence will affect your purchasing experience can help ensure you’re getting a fair price, that the diamond has good value, and that it will hold its value for years to come.

What is Diamond Fluorescence?

Genuine, high-quality diamonds are an expensive investment, but they can prove quite valuable even years from now if you maintain their health with good, consistent care. However, fluorescent properties can significantly affect this investment, and its longevity.

You will know if a diamond has fluorescence if it emits a blue glow while under a UV light (commonly referred to as a black light). Fluorescence is caused by trace elements that are found in naturally formed diamonds during the crystallization process.

About one-third of all gem-quality diamonds have fluorescence, yet only about 1% of diamonds are visually affected. In order to determine whether or not a diamond is fluorescent, it will have to undergo the black light diamond test.

Once a diamond is exposed to black light, it will be measured on the diamond fluorescence scale. There are five levels in this scale:

  1. None

A diamond with no fluorescence will not emit a blue glow under the black light diamond test. Diamonds with zero fluorescence are considered to be the most valuable, desired, and expensive.

  1. Faint

Underneath a black light, diamonds with Faint fluorescence emit a very soft blue glow. The amount of trace minerals in these diamonds is so minimal that it will not affect the quality or value of the diamond. Diamonds that rank Faint and None of the fluorescence scale are considered to be of the same quality.

  1. Medium

Medium fluorescent diamonds emit a light blue glow underneath black light. The blue color that these diamonds emit can complement low-grade diamonds that appear to be a bit yellow, making them more valuable than they would be without fluorescence.

  1. Strong

Diamonds with Strong fluorescence emit a deep, blue glow underneath black light. The value of low-grade diamonds with Strong fluorescence can be improved with Strong fluorescence, as it will balance the yellow tint, but it can decrease the value of premium diamonds, as they may appear cloudy.

  1. Very Strong

Diamonds with Very Strong fluorescence emit a bright blue glow underneath black light. Very Strong fluorescence will make most diamonds appear cloudy and significantly decrease their price, value, and desirability.

How Important Is Fluorescence In A Diamond?

Whether fluorescence in a diamond is good or bad will be up to you, or the one you are buying the diamond for. Some individuals find “Very Strong” fluorescence a novelty quality, which could make that gift extremely valuable to them, even though the market might not agree.

In addition, you will have to take your budget into consideration. If buying a genuine diamond is of utmost importance to you, but you would like to avoid spending a fortune, a lower-grade, fluorescent diamond could be perfectly suited for you.

On the other hand, you may want to avoid diamonds that glow under black light if you know the person wearing them would find that unappealing. As we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

When it comes to finding the perfect diamond, we can tailor our customer’s orders to their exact specifications. We have many customers that want us to take out all of the fluorescence, and some customers that prefer us to take out just the strong fluorescence.

What Are Hearts and Arrows Diamonds?

Daniel Grunberger · September 30, 2021 · Leave a Comment

If you have ever been in the market for diamonds of any kind, you may have found yourself asking the question, what are Hearts and Arrows diamonds? As with nearly all diamonds, each cut gives the gem a certain reflective pattern, which can say a lot about its quality and brilliance.

Hearts and Arrows diamonds are precision cut round diamonds, known for their distinct reflective pattern that features exact angles and symmetry often referred to as “optical precision”. This is done by the cutter aligning the facets precisely in three dimensions, which maximizes the light handling potential of the facet arrangement. When diamonds are cut to these proper proportions and crafted with a high degree of precision, a Hearts and Arrows diamond will exhibit a sharp pattern of eight arrows in the face-up view, and eight small hearts from pavilion-view. But, what makes these diamonds so unique, and what are the benefits of Hearts and Arrows diamonds over other cuts?

Benefits of Hearts and Arrows Diamonds

Initially introduced by Japanese diamond merchants and gemologists, Hearts and Arrows diamonds are one of the world’s most in-demand diamond cuts, and their popularity has soared in recent years. Some of the main benefits of Hearts and Arrows diamonds include:

  • Symmetry – The patterns of a Hearts and Arrows diamond appear in brilliant cut stones that feature exceptional symmetry and parallelism. The eight heart shapes viewed from the pavilion are a result of the reflection of sixteen lower girdle facets situated in the table of the stone. All of the main facets of an H&A diamond must be aligned accurately at 180 degrees opposite each other for this effect to take place. As a result, only the most professional cutters can create these diamonds, because if any of the facets are not the exact same shape or size, the pattern will be misaligned or distorted.
What Are Hearts And Arrows Diamonds
  • Craftsmanship– While a great number of cutters hope to achieve the accuracy of a Hearts and Arrows diamond, the craftsmanship calls for more time, skill, and material. For this reason, H&A diamonds are more expensive to produce, and require the most elite cutters in the industry.
  • Light performance – Because of the precise facet alignment found in a Hearts and Arrows diamond, it forms a series of tiny mirrors that refract and reflect light back to your eyes. This adds to the overall brilliance of the cut.
  • Value – For the most part, Hearts and Arrows diamonds are superbly cut and perform very well with brilliance. While they are more expensive to produce, their value and impact is exceptional, and they almost always have excellent performance.

Are Hearts And Arrows Diamonds Worth It?

Despite the unique cut and brilliance of a Hearts and Arrows diamond, many in the market for a similar stone may question if they are worth the investment. Buyers often consider the argument between Hearts and Arrows vs. Brilliant Cut diamonds, and if the former offers a truly superior design than the latter. While brilliant cut diamonds are unique and should have perfect symmetry, this is not always the case. However, the exact Hearts and Arrows pattern is derived from a perfect symmetry, and if the stone is not 100% symmetrical, it usually isn’t considered a Hearts and Arrows diamond. Gemologists and diamond merchants alike will usually express how essential it is for proper research when considering an H&A diamond. The very distinct specifications of the cut, as well as proper evaluation of the stone, must be researched before considering a Hearts and Arrows purchase. But, if everything looks the part, these diamonds are very much worth it.

The 4 Cs Of Diamonds, Which Is Most Important?

Daniel Grunberger · August 3, 2021 · Leave a Comment

When it comes to choosing and buying your ideal diamond, it’s absolutely critical that you consider the four Cs of diamonds: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. It’s these pillars that your choice should be based upon. The market for diamond rings, necklaces, and earrings is fairly substantial, and you’ll undoubtedly encounter tons of options and styles no matter where you look.

However, regardless of where you go looking, if you want an expensive diamond that shines brightly and makes a statement or even something that evokes more sentimental value, then knowing the difference between the 4 C’s of diamonds is incredibly important.

The 4 C’s Of Diamonds

  1. Diamond Cut

There is a standard cut grading system that has five grades, from excellent to poor. The grade represents the quality of the diamond’s proportion and takes into consideration other aspects such as angles, brilliance, and finishing details.

  1. Diamond Color

Diamond color refers to how colorless a diamond is. This grading system goes from D to Z, with a D grade representing no color and a Z grade representing a yellow tint. Everyone has a color preference, so make sure you understand this system and which letter grades represent which shades.

  1. Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to the degree to which a diamond is free of any flaws or imperfections. The rating system for clarity begins with FL, meaning flawless, and works its way across to I2 (Inclusions 2).

  1. Diamond Carat

The carat is how much the diamond weighs, not the actual size of the diamond. If you want something that’s shiny, but you’re looking for a diamond that is more budget-friendly, opting in for a fancy cut with a lower carat could be a solution for you. Popular carat weights include 1/2 ct., 3/4 ct., and 1 ct.

The Most Important C When Buying A Diamond

When you’re buying a diamond, professionals in the jewelry and diamond industry will commonly tell you that the most important “C” to consider is the cut. This determines how much light reflects off the surface of your diamond, and often directly affects how others may perceive the level of shine, and therefore quality.

A well-cut diamond will appear brighter than one that is poorly cut even if they both share many other, similar qualities. Also, different shapes tend to produce different characteristics so it’s important to know what shape you want before shopping for your diamond.

How To Choose A Diamond

Choosing the perfect diamond can be an overwhelming task. With so many options, it’s difficult to know where to start. Choosing a diamond starts with determining what shape you like best and the ideal carat weight.

  • Choosing The Diamond Shape

There are many different types of diamonds such as round shaped or princess cut, so when it comes to buying the best diamond it’s good to think about which type will fit in best with your personality and preference before making a decision about which one fits best into your budget.

  • Determining Carat Weight

If you have a 1.5 ct diamond with a poor cut and clarity, it will not look as nice as a flawless 1.0 ct. diamond. The best tip is not to get caught up in the carat weight but to choose a diamond that has an excellent or ideal cut instead.

  • Identify The Kind Of Diamond For Your Budget

Based on the diamond shape and minimum carat size, you can start to factor in clarity, color, and cut. Start with the highest quality in clarity, color, and cut and if the price is out of your budget range, you can start making some compromises.

Why Do Women Love Diamonds?

Daniel Grunberger · July 1, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Why do women love diamonds? Once upon a time, women primarily acquired diamonds via gifting. Whether it was the engagement ring, anniversary band, or custom design crafted for a birthday or other special occasion, it was traditional for women to be at least one degree removed from the purchasing process.

Why do women love diamonds? Today, the situation is radically different. As women now have higher levels of purchasing power and personal independence, they also are buying more diamond jewelry for themselves.

Why Do Women Like Jewelry?

Many women today buy jewelry for themselves, and whether it’s for a sentimental reason or for a professional milestone, women who love their emotional and financial independence are proud to self-gift jewelry.

Glamour Magazine reports that in 2018, MVI Marketing, which provides consumer research on luxury goods and jewelry, found that 51% of millennial women with a household income of $75,000 or more purchase their own accessories, from rings to necklaces to bracelets.

Self Gifting Jewelry

As part of their ongoing effort to advance the jewelry and watch industry, the WJA is rolling out an international campaign to encourage women to buy fine jewelry for themselves. March is Me is about empowering women to use their voices and do things for themselves.

In the retail environment, this can mean purchasing fine jewelry, such as right-hand rings, or commissioning custom pieces. Millennials – the demographic most likely to be self-purchasers – are also the biggest fans of custom jewelry.

The key to appealing to these customers? Be willing to communicate through a variety of digital channels, keeping time-consuming in-person meetings purposeful and to a minimum. Value is also very important to the Millennial shopper. If they’re going to spend money, they want to get the best possible quality and make the most of their budget. Be aware that these women wearing jewelry are also researchers. Often socially conscious, a self purchasing woman wants to be sure that the products they select are ethically and environmentally responsible.

On top of this, of course, the jewelry must be breathtakingly beautiful, flawlessly made, and of the highest quality. And the customer service experience must be just as top-notch. But jewelers are a special group – inspired artists who deliver gorgeous jewelry on an often impossible timeline.
